Patterns of Change in Hawai‘i’s Small-Boat Commercial Handline Fisheries COMING IN NOVEMBER! PFRP PI Workshop
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction This article summarizes key findings from two recently completed Pelagic Fisheries Research Program (PFRP) projects, each designed to examine change in Hawai‘i’s small-boat commercial handline fisheries. The first study focused on factors associated with diminished activity in the ika-shibi fishery, a long-standing and once-lucrative yellowfin and bigeye tuna fishery specific to Hawai‘i Island. The second study focused on small-boat tuna operations at Cross Seamount and at private fish-aggregating devices (PFADs) around the islands. (Please see figure 2 of the accompanying Drazen and De Forest/“The Influence of Hawaiian Seamounts...” article for map showing Cross Seamount and localities on Hawai‘i Island.) The majority of project fieldwork was completed between 2005 and 2007 by Janna Shackeroff, who was then finishing her doctoral work at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, and by Courtney Carothers, who was then finishing her doctoral work at the University of Washington, Department of Anthropology.

Population Dynamics of Bigeye and Yellowfin tuna in Hawai‘i’s Fishery1
Around the Hawaiian Islands, a variety of small and medium-scale fisheries target bigeye (Thunnus obsesus) and yellowfin tuna (T. albacares) associated with offshore seamounts and weather monitoring buoys, an inshore network of fish aggregating devices (FADs), and natural aggregation sites (Itano and Holland, 2000). These fisheries, conducted from longline, troll and handline, and to a lesser e...
متن کاملTechnological and Economic Interrelationships in Hawaii's Troll and Handline Fisheries
—This paper examines technological and economic interrelationships in Hawaii’s troll and handline fisheries. A multiproduct dual revenue function was specified separately for the two fisheries to estimate own-price, cross-price, and effort elasticities of supply for selected species or groups of species. Various aspects of multiproduct cost structure were also analyzed with the information cont...

The impacts on aquaculture and fisheries sectors from climate change in the southern part of Iraq will likely to be both positive and negative arising from direct and indirect impacts on natural resources. The main elements of climate change that could potentially impact fisheries and aquaculture activities in Iraq are temperature, rain patterns, shortage of freshwater, circulation, upwelling, ...
متن کاملCatch, bycatch and discards of the Galapagos Marine Reserve small-scale handline fishery
Fisheries bycatch is a significant marine conservation issue as valuable fish are wasted and protected species harmed with potential negative ecological and socio-economic consequences. Even though there are indications that the small-scale handline fishery of the Galapagos Marine Reserve has a low selectivity, information on its bycatch has never been published. We used onboard monitoring and ...
